The US healthcare system is changing and it’s about time. Direct Primary Care. Pratter. PBM management. Sound Greek? Well, let’s change that. I’m a huge fan of the changes that are emerging all across our country with the above mentioned and many, many more new tools. My own healthcare is delivered through direct primary care.
I’m under age 65 and signed up for a $49.00/month plan with YourChoiceDirectCare in Brighton, MI. I rarely go to the doctor, but I love knowing that if I need something, I can quickly find Dr. Savage. Direct Primary care docs do NOT accept any form of insurance. They don’t take my high deductible Blue Cross plan nor do they accept Medicare. The beauty of that? They have time to treat patients. They have access to discount medications – they’re a wholesale pharmacy. They have deeply discounted x-rays, durable medical goods, diabetes supplies and the list goes on and on. I firmly believe that by “spending” my $49.00 a month, I’m saving much more in the long run. When I get poison ivy in the summer, I won’t go to urgent care for $150.00 plus the steroid shot for $80.00. I’ll call Dr. Savage and be helped for $5.00 (medication).
Medicare beneficiaries can certainly sign up for the Direct Primary Care model but, again, you won’t be using Medicare to pay for services.
